MISS USA® 2004 Pageant to be broadcast from the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles Live on NBC

Special Miss USA Fear Factor Scheduled as Lead-in to Miss USA 2004

New York, January 20, 2004 – Paula M. Shugart, President of the Miss Universe Organization announced today that, for the first-time-ever, the 53rd annual MISS USA pageant will be broadcast live from the legendary Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, California, on April 12, 2004, on the NBC Television Network. The competition will be nationally televised at 9 pm ET/delayed PT, following a special episode of Fear Factor featuring six beautiful, yet top secret, Miss USA delegates. The Miss USA Fear Factor combo, which dominated in the 2003 ratings, will air for a second consecutive year.

“Typically this time of year, the Kodak is playing host to the Oscars, but with so many television scheduling changes, we were able to slip into the opening,” said Shugart. “This year’s pageant will be an elegant primetime event featuring the most beautiful young women in the country competing from the most glamorous location in Hollywood.”

In its first full year with NBC, the Miss Universe Organization, which is a joint venture between NBC and Donald J. Trump, has seen unprecedented growth in ratings, sponsorship, and progress for the future. In March, NBC’s telecast of “Miss USA 2003″ showed a 57 percent increase in adult viewers 18-49 (the highest for the pageant in five years), an increase of 147 percent among teen viewers, and 50 percent in total viewers over last year’s event airing on CBS. The event finished a close second in its time slot winning adults 18-49, teens, and men and women 18-34 and helping NBC to win ratings overall for the night.

The Miss Universe Organization, producers of the MISS UNIVERSE®, MISS USA® and MISS TEEN USA® Pageants, is a Donald J. Trump and National Broadcasting Company, Inc. (NBC) partnership. Utilizing its nationwide grass roots infrastructure, the Miss Universe Organization is committed to increasing awareness of breast and ovarian cancers. By forging relationships with organizations committed to research and education, such as the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund, Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, Gilda’s Club and the National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations, Miss USA is armed to impact women today.

Congratulations to the newly-crowned Miss Country Western USA Jessica Conjager

In Burbank, California a new “Miss Country Western USA” pageant winner (Miss Jessica Conjager) was crowned at a local restaurant. Of the nearly 50 contestant considered, Jessica was selected to represent the new pageant. According to Pageant Director, Mr. Daniel Etter, “Jessica was selected for that Girl Next Door appeal, and her flair in bringing the wholesome values the Miss Country Western USA Pageant officials and judges were looking for.”

The 20 year old, Jessica Conjager, hails from Simi Valley,California, and is studding Animal Husbandry at Moorpark College to become a Zoo Keeper. Talk about Keeper, Jessica as pictured in the acceptable pageant outfits will be appearing at car club rallies, store and mall openings and available to participate all over California as a representative for the newly born pageant. According to Executive Producer, Mr. James Etter; “Miss Country Western is a long overdue addition to the pageant arena.” “Typical of the California lifestyle, is the Western Look.” According to Etter.

Miss Country Western USA will have a different quality to set it apart form the cheesy “G” Strings represented in many other pageants. No bare bellies or low cuts tops. The swim suit competition is giving way to country Cowgirl Shorts with a rolled cuff, like so many youngsters are allowed to wear to public school. Showing natural beauty and shape, but with the least exposure to not embarrass our candidates. We are seeking beautiful girls like Jessica, but wish to install in that quest a wholesome value. The balance of the attire will include long jeans, cowgirl boots, long sleeve conservatively cut Western Styled tops and Western Hat and Belt. Contestants are permitted to enter either of two preliminary competitions, which brings together the divide of the state in the preliminaries at Bakersfield.

The Southern California Pageant Preliminary competition will be held near Los Angeles on May 12, 2012, and the Northern preliminary competition will be held near Modesto on May 26, 2012. Out of state entries form the other 49 can participate with either venue. Restricted to ages 16-29, this years pageant will be coupled with a State Wide Classic car $1,000 “Poker Run” for the Gold, and the Finals in Central California on July 28, 2012.

Deadline for the Pageant Contestants is March 15, 2012. The top 25 contestants form both Southern California and Northern California will pair off at the Finals and be vying for a $1,000 Cash award, $500 to their High School or towards College expenses for continued education. Also sponsored gifts and donated good of approximately $2,000 to the winner will bring the “Jack Pot” awards stuffed in a trophy of approximately $3,500.

The entry fee is modest at $135.00 Keeping the cost to a level where the contestants can easily gain sponsors to pay the fees. There are no other charges, other than dinner (which is optional) at the preliminary contests. Some pageants charge for each category. The modest entry fee are all the fees required by the pageant to go forward into the finals. Contestants do provide their own wardrobe.

Our reigning Miss Country Western USA 2011-2012, Jessica Cronjager, will reign over the competition and be the Grand Marshall of the parade kicking off the finals in Coulterville next July. For more information go to the web site (which will be updated by mid November) and email the pageant officials, apply for applications, learn about the event or enter the $1,000 Classic Car “Poker Run” You can do it all there, as these events support one another to bring a day to remember. “We are seeking sponsors at this time to be the official outfitters, or advertisers.” “We are picking the best of the best to represent the golden days of California and serve our event, which is also helping a needy California Rancher or Farmer from the proceeds of this event”. According to Etter. If you fit the wholesome values we are seeking, you can apply on line from the web-site. There are educational requirements and standards of the Pageant that one should review if interested in being in this unique event.

Jessica Conjager has been crowned the new Miss Country Western USA.

The 2011 Miss Country Western USA is Jessica Conjager.

Congratulations to the new Miss Country Western USA.

MISS AMERICA TERESA SCANLAN:

Why All Americans Have a Stake In the Success of Our Farmers and Ranchers

The spring air is always full of hope back home in Gering, Nebraska.

This time of year, farmers plant seeds in hopes for Mother Nature’s cooperation and a successful harvest. Ranchers help birth the next generation of their herds and hope for fair market prices. And workers at the local sugar plant catch their breath after a busy winter and hope for a bumper crop this fall so they can do it all over again.

The Miss America crown that I’m so honored to wear is a symbol of the hope and optimism that gets us through each day. But it also bears a responsibility to help people who have so little of those things—not just in the U.S., but abroad as well.

Unfortunately, there are far too many with far too little right now. Families continue to battle a slow-moving economy here in America, wondering if they can give their children a chance at a better future while they struggle just to pay their monthly bills.

Meanwhile, our friends overseas struggle to simply put food on the table after natural disasters in other parts of the world have wreaked havoc on food supplies.

While considering ways to help these circumstances, we end up right back on the farm, and those tiny seeds that farmers are currently planting suddenly seem to carry a lot more weight.

This year’s crop has the potential to be the most valuable in U.S. history, and that translates to more jobs and stimulus for our hurting economy. Further, the Federal Reserve recently credited agricultural production with helping lead the nation’s recession recovery, so whether we live in New York’s Manhattan or Manhattan, Kansas, we should all be rooting for a good growing season.

Increased U.S. production would also help ease the political instability and tensions aided by food shortages in other parts of the world. U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack told Congress a few weeks ago that farming and ranching will take the crown in record exports this year if things go as planned.

Of course, if years of involvement in theater and pageants have taught me anything, it’s that things rarely go as planned. U.S. producers will need more than a couple of good harvests to make a difference globally because population is exploding—predicted to grow by 2 billion people in the next 40 years—and U.S. farm output will need to expand substantially just to keep pace.

Can we feed a growing world population, fuel our economy, and still offer wholesome food choices to Americans? Sure, just as long as we avoid weakening the very infrastructure that makes it all possible.

As I write this, America has just 210,000 full-time farms. That’s it. And being from an agricultural community, I know these aren’t large corporations with giant bank accounts. These are small businesses with huge overhead expenses and a history of modest profits.

Farming and ranching is expensive, and the risks associated with it are unlike any other profession, which is why we’re faced with fewer and fewer U.S. producers to support more and more people.

Retired Army General Wesley Clark recently called these men and women a “thin green line standing between prosperity and disaster.” This line, he said, must be held and not weakened any further if America stands a chance to combat the challenges ahead of us.

But to do so will require a shift in thinking.

Modern-day agriculture has to do its part in reaching out and teaching us about what they do and how they do it. Educational groups like The Hand That Feeds U.S. and the U.S. Cattlemen’s Association are a good start, but it’s not enough.

The rest of us must reconnect with our rural roots and understand that we all have a stake in the success of farmers and ranchers. Urban and rural America need to come together, and I plan to spend my time as Miss America to make that happen.

After all, I was Miss Nebraska first. And if a small town girl from the Midwest can make it all the way to Miss America, maybe she can help bring America back to the Midwest.
