On September 14th, 2014, Kira Kazantsev, an accomplished singer, made history by becoming the third consecutive Miss New York to be crowned Miss America. She was crowned by fellow New Yorker Nina Davuluri, Miss America 2014. On September 13, 2015, she crowned her successor, Miss America 2016 Betty Cantrell, Miss Georgia.
Kira’s acceptance of the highly-prized title was just the beginning of a Year of Service that took her to every corner of the nation.
As Miss America 2015 she embarked on her national speaking tour, logging approximately 20,000 miles a month, addressing an array of audiences on her platform, Love Shouldn’t Hurt: Protecting Women Against Domestic Violence.
She also acted as the official National Goodwill Ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and will advocate for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) initiatives in education.
Kira is a graduate of Hofstra University, where she held a triple major, studying Political Science, Global Studies and Geography. Not to mention, she is also trilingual; speaking English, Russian and Spanish.
Kira’s goal is to obtain a Juris Doctorate and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and she’s already been accepted at the University of Notre Dame Law School.
In the Talent Competition, she performed a memorable rendition of Pherrel Williams’ song “Happy” while clapping along with a now-famous red plastic cup. The vocal act was inspired by the “Cup Song” audition scene, “You’re Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone”. Although critics complained the “talent” was sorely lacking when compared against contestants who had spent a decade developing their skills, Kira defended her choice as proving that any little girl can become Miss America.
During the onstage questions, judge Lee Meriwether, a former Miss America, asked Miss New York about how men dominate the U.S. Congress and what causes female politicians might consider uniting about. Kazantsev discussed the problem of sexual assaults female service members in the military as needing to be addressed by lawmakers.
During the swimsuit competition, retitled “Lifestyle and Fitness”, the slender Kazantsev stood out in a hot magenta pink bikini with buckle accents on the hips and skin tone platform sandles.
