God Save the Beauty Queens” by Tamara Jones
Be sure to check out More Magazine’s June 2011 issue, which runs a terrific article on Mrs pageants, titled “God Save the Beauty Queens”. Written by Tamara Jones and photographed by Eric Ray Davidson, the nine-page article presents a balanced, fair view of the Mrs pageant circuit and the women pursuing the crown.
Among the pageants discussed is the Beauties of America system, which the article follows backstage in Myrtle, South Carolina in August 2010, where the author followed “two days of interviews, rehearsals, and other preliminaries, then a two-hour show including a serenade under hot lights by an Elvis impersonator), and the victory of the contestants in each age category.
We loved the amusing, sometimes wry, and surprisingly sympathetic depiction of the women competing…”It’s not laundry, it’s not grocery shopping. It’s Cinderella time,” says Thomas, who works in the insurance business and has been married thirty years. ” Doing this is kind of like rediscovering me.”
