Duke of Edinburgh Award was awarded to Elizabeth Fechtel, Miss America’s Outstanding Teen 2012, at the 2012 Miss America Pageant

Miss America's Outstanding Teen 2012 Elizabeth Fechtel was awarded The Duke of Edinburgh Award at the 2012 Miss America Pageant.
Tampa, Florida – January 12, 2012 – Miss America’s Outstanding Teen 2012 Elizabeth Fechtel received The Duke of Edinburgh Award at the Miss America Pageant 2012 on Thursday evening. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is an award that was created in 1956 in the UK by Her Majesty the Queen’s husband, HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Its mission is to positively influence the lives of America’s youth by inspiring youth to grow and achieve. This past year the organization formed a strategic partnership with the Miss America Organization.
The award is broken into four sections Community Service, Special Skills, Physical Recreation, and Adventurous Journey. Each section has a different set of requirements and all in all it takes about a year to complete. In an effort to complete the Adventurous Journey portion of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Miss America’s Outstanding Teen 2012 Elizabeth Fechtel, along with Miss America 2011 Teresa Scanlan, Miss Florida 2011 Kristina Janolo, Miss Florida’s Outstanding Teen 2011 Rachel Strever and Miss Florida’s Outstanding 2010 MaryKatherine Fechtel, spent two days enduring the outdoors at the Inverness and Crystal Rivers in Florida. The young women learned about the local wildlife, prepared and cooked meals by camp fire, canoed, and even snorkeled.
