Statistically, there are specific colors for pageant gowns that are much more successful in pageants.
Pageant gown colors do count! According to our statistical research, there are specific pageant gown colors that are consistently successful in national and international pageants. The fact that certain colors fare better than others does not mean that the color wins the title for a girl. It means that in competitive situations, judges have consistently responded exceptionally well to contestants wearing those pageant gown colors.
Frankly, judges don’t care about the shades of contestants’ pageant gowns. We are talking about gut reactions in fast-paced judging situations. A judge simply may not react as favorably to a young woman in, let’s say, an olive-green gown as he or she might to the same contestant in white.
In respect to instant reactions, all colors are not equal.
Here, in order of overall success, are the most successful colors for pageant gowns. These colors have made the semi-finals, the finals, or won the crown in major pageants, with consistency over time:
- Skin tone/ beige / light gold

Keep in mind that the success rate of some gown colors fluctuates from year to year as contestants copy what won the year before or are influenced by fashion trends.
For instance, a decade ago, black, currently a highly successful color, wouldn’t even have made the list for Miss America. Yet, white has unquestionably remained the most successful gown color in all major pageants over many decades.
What colors don’t win? The biggest losers in evening gown competition are brown, gray, camel, rust, mustard, olive green, navy blue, dark purple, orange, and stripes.
These color patterns apply specifically to national- and international-level competition. A far wider range of colors win on the local, state, and regional levels, which means that the lower the level of competition, the more colors you can successfully wear.
