Baby-boomer pageant winner will travel the country representing the American women who have reached the “Age of Elegance”
Los Angeles, CA – Elisabeth Howard from Los Angeles, CA is the newly crowned Ms. Senior America who won the title on October 11, 2012, at Harrah’s Resort Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, NJ. She represented California as Ms. Senior California and competed against 34 contestants from around the United States. Contestants were judged in interview, evening gown and talent as well as reciting their philosophy of life during the three day competition.
As 2012 Ms. Senior America, Howard will travel around the country representing the American woman 60 years of age and over who has reached the “Age of Elegance”. The Ms. Senior America Pageant is the world’s first and foremost pageant to emphasize and give honor to women who have reached the “Age of Elegance.” It is a search for the gracious lady who best exemplifies the dignity, maturity and inner beauty of all senior Americans. The Ms. Senior America philosophy is based upon the belief that seniors are the foundation of America, and our most valuable treasure. It is upon their knowledge, experience and resources that the younger generation has the opportunity to build a better society.
Elisabeth Howard, Ms Senior America 2012, won the hearts of the judges and the audience with her nightingale voice as she sang “Sempre Libera” at the National competition in October 2012. However, Ms. Howard’s journey to this dazzling performance was not always an easy one.
While in her Master’s Program at Juilliard, she lost her voice — every singer’s greatest fear! While completing her master’s program classes, Ms. Howard was teaching a minimum of twenty hours each week, was President of the Honor Society and with the incorrect use of her voice – she strained her voice to the point of losing it. Fearing that her voice was damaged permanently and unwilling to live with this prognosis, Ms. Howard did extensive research to understand the “human singing mechanism”. As a result, she went on to develop the Vocal Power singing technique. She founded and still directs the Vocal Power Academy out of Los Angeles, teaching thousands of individuals around the world how to sing correctly. She has published books and teaching CDs on this technique.
Not sing again for the rest of her life? Not teach others to sing? “Neither of those options was ever considered” says Elisabeth today. Her perseverance and commitment to regaining her voice have given “voice” to thousands of individuals who now learn proper singing techniques.
Perseverance and a commitment to “keep going – no matter what” – have been driving forces for Elisabeth throughout her life. She says to the young and old alike “take your dreams out the closet – dust them off, live your dreams and Let it Shine. “
Among some of the distinguished artists Ms. Howard has worked with are Sting, The Police, Paige O’Hara, voice of Belle in the film Beauty and the Beast, and Maxine Nightingale (“Lead Me On”), Priscilla Presley, Tony Danza, Traci Lords, and Stephen Dorff.
This Pageant Program for California was launched in 1987 and for the past 13 years has been under the leadership of Marilyn McCabe Kohler of Laguna Hills, California. Under her leadership, the California program has grown to become the largest in the nation. Upon announcement of Kohler’s retirement in October, the Board of Directors of the California program has elected Pamela Wheeler to succeed Kohler.
Wheeler won the title of Ms. Senior California in 2010 and is now the CEO of the Ms. Senior California of America, Inc. 501(c)3 organization; she and Kohler were on hand at the pageant to watch Howard take the Ms. Senior America title. “We are so excited to see Elisabeth win the crown; she is an extremely talented woman who has a heart for helping others achieve their dreams,” says Wheeler.
Ms. Senior California of America, Inc. was established as a non-profit corporation in 2010 and is affiliated with Ms. Senior America, Inc., founded in 1971.
