The 32nd Annual Miss Teenage California Scholarship Pageant was held April 23-25, 2010. Candidates from every corner of the Golden State competed for thousands in college scholarships and prizes.
May 05, 2010 – At approximately 5:00 PM on Sunday, April 25,2010 Mary-Kate FitzPatrick representing her hometown of Danville, won the Miss Teenage California crown that was so illusive to her four years prior. Before an overflow crowd she received a standing ovation. Why such an enthusiastic response? The audience had listened to her on-stage question which just happened to be ” tell us about one life changing experience in your life.” It could not have been more appropriate. With emotion and humor, Mary-Kate spoke of her climb back to good health. The audience and the judges were obviously moved.
For Mary-Kate FitzPatrick the journey actually began in 2006. She was 14 at the time. A lovely young lady with bright green eyes and black hair. She also was 50 lbs. heavier. Back in 2006 when she entered the pageant she didn’t even place in the Top 30. As someone who was teased since the first day of second grade when a boy called her fat to her face, she knew the pain of being rediculed. High school was brutal. The kids were cruel and made jokes about me when they thought I couldn’t hear. The simplest of tasks she says of climbing the stairs had her exhausted and panting. With her health slowly deteriorating, so did her self-esteem. Mary-Kate knew then that she had to make a life changing decision.
For six months she exercised every day, and measured out the portions of food she ate. She analyzed what was beneficial to her health and what wasn’t. Fifty pounds later she says she was comfortable in her own skin for the very first time. She learned so many things about herself that she never knew. She enjoyed running, weight lifting, going on long walks and bike rides. She says she also realized how limited she made her life before her self-inflicted boot camp. Mary-Kate began to make friends and blossom. She went out on a Saturday night with friends for the first time. She learned that she was indeed stronger than she ever thought. She now encourages others to make healthy life choices every day whether big or small in size. To this day, “I exercise every day and eat right. I’ve never been happier to be healthy, but most of all to be alive and have the ability to live every day to the fullest.”
The new Miss Teenage California 2010 stands 5’7″, weighs 125 lbs. with black hair and green eyes. She attended Corondelet High School, and hopes to obtain a degree in Film and Social Justice from Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles. The new Miss Teenage California won a $10,000 College Scholarship or $7,000 Cash Award.
