Charissa Chong is crowned 2013 Miss Global International Malaysia
Organised by Merveilleux Production under licence from ERM Marketing Sdn. Bhd, the winner Charissa Chong, 19, will represent Malaysia at the world finals in Albania in November 2013.
Tall, petite and musically talented, the 171cm tall Chong scored high points with her show of confidence and intelligence during the question and answer session in the grand final on Saturday.
“The most difficult decision I ever made between my profession and personal life was whether to continue my study or work.
“But then I chose both because I thought that was the best way for me to take care of my mother, and I am proud that I was able to do so.
“I must say that decision had not only taught me about responsibility, but I learned to juggle my time while multi-tasking, which really prepared me for the competitive world,” was how she answered one of the questions.
Chong who hails from Kuala Lumpur beat 17 other finalists to take the title from reigning queen, Sherine Tan, during the four-hour competition at Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club.
She also won the subsidiary title of Miss Courteous.
The event was held over 10 days in Miri and Miss Global International Malaysia is the first and only international pageant held in Sarawak and indeed Borneo. Usually the finalists fly into Kuala Lumpur for the grand finals but for once, everyone apart from local Mirians, had to fly into Miri, the second city in Sarawak. Throughout the 10 days journey, the 18 finalists not only visited famous tourism spots in Miri and involved in charity visits and activities such as Home for the Aged and the Miri Aurism Center, they also had their very first experience in self defense crash course, hashing in the dense Miri jungle, riding a superbike and golf clinic.
“The aim of holding Miss Global International Malaysia in Miri is to promote my beloved home town in particular and Sarawak in general,” beamed the indefatigable and competent Marlene Lim who had organised the same contest for the past 2 years and 2013 was her third. She has grown from strength to strength as proclaimed by Sean Chia See Chun, GM of ERM (Exclusive Resources Marketing) which holds the Malaysian franchise but sublets Merveilleux Production to organise the contest. Marlene Lim is also a former Miss Sarawak and a representative of Malaysia in Miss Tourism Queen International 2011 and Miss Global International 2010 in which she placed 2nd RU in the world final.
Julies Lucas from Miri and Julie Tan from Kuala Lumpur, tied in the accumulated points, were made to share the first runner-up position. This is the first in Malaysia’s pageant history.
Meanwhile, 22-year old Elvina Tan from Selangor won three subsidiary titles — Miss Eastwood Popularity, Miss Perfect Body and Miss Charisma.
The subsidiary title of Miss JD’s Personality was won by Sharon Kow while Miss Charity went to Gwendeline Loh, an education centre manager who hails from Johor.
Eva Yap, also from Johor, and Quek Choon Chin from Malacca each won the subsidiary titles of Miss Crowning Glory and Miss Magic Beauty.
Nancy Marcus, a 27-year-old financial consultant, won the subsidiary title of Miss Imperial Talent.
The proceeds from the sales of tables at the gala dinner will be channeled to the Miri Autistic Association and Zero Strays Miri.
Among the public figure attending the events are judges Miss Australia Gemma Taylor, famous TV Producer Kenji Chan, international journalist Kee Hua Chee, ERM Manager Sean Chia, Miss Malaysia Winnie Chan, Peoplegraphy Director Joe Ong, Miss Globe Malaysia 2012 Kieren Laurent, Miss Oriental Borneo 2012 Mandy Lim, Miss Oriental Malaysia 2012 Esther Tan and many more.
The main sponsor for the event are Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club, Ajisen Ramen Miri, Sean Kong Design, Ideal Advertising, Peoplegraphy Studio, The Imperial Mall, Nissan by Edaran Tan Chong Motor, Miri City Council, Magic Beauty Studio, Onstage Hairdressing, Tiger Beer, Luxeswinger, Misa Luvi, Tech Garment, Woopz Bikinis, JD’s Fine Foods, Boulevard Restaurant, Vantage Productions, WebTV and many more.
Apart from that, the first runner ups will have an opportunity to represent the country in international pageant as well. Nancy Marcus, who is Miss Talent MGIM 2013, has been elected by Merveilleuxm Production, under ERM licence, to represent Malaysia in Miss Supranational 2013 in Belarus, due to be held from 17 Aug to 7 Sept. MerveilleuxM Production will also soon select a representative from Malaysia to compete in World Miss University 2013.
