Pageant Winners >Miss USA > Miss USA 2012 Nana Meriwether
Miss USA 2012, Nana Meriwether, competed as Miss Maryland USA and placed as first runner-up to Miss Rhode Island, Olivia Culpo. When Culpo went on to be crowned Miss Universe 2012 and was required to vacate her Miss USA title to assume her new duties, the Miss USA title was passed on to Meriwether.
Nana Meriwether, Miss USA 2012, was crowned by Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo during a ceremony at Trump Towers.
She was crowned Miss USA 2012 by Culpo as Donald Trump looked on at a ceremony held at the Trump Towers and completed the responsibilities of the title for the remainder of her reign. She lost the Miss California USA Pageant four times, finishing as first runner-up twice before moving to Maryland where she finally won the title that sent her to the Miss USA Pageant.
Meriwether comes from a privileged family and attended the prestigious Sidwell Friends School where many President’s children have attended – including Malia and Sasha Obama, President Clinton’s daughter Chelsea, Al Gore’s son, and the children of President’s Roosevelt and Nixon.
Her parents are serious overachievers — both doctors — and her father, Dr. Delano Meriwether, broke racial barriers as the first African America to attend Duke University Medical School. He also was a track and field star who appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1971 saluted with the headline, “The Amazing Dr. Meriwether.”
Meriwether’s father broke racial barriers as the first African America to attend Duke University.
Like her parents, Nana is also a serious over-achiever. After graduating from Sidwell, she attended Duke University and UCLA where she was an honors student, women’s volleyball team star and All-American. She also trained to try out for the U.S. Olympic volleyball team.
As if that were not sufficient, Nana established her own charitable organization, the Meriwether Foundation, which provides charitable outreach to communities in five African countries to assist with sanitation, and education. After transferring to UCLA, she went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in political science with a focus on international relations. She is currently studying in a post baccalaureate pre-medical program. She plans to apply to medical school and follow in her parents’ footsteps.
