What is your opinion about the draft?
“My opinion about the draft is, I don’t think that men really like to go to war either. I don’t think that anyone really likes the idea of going out and shooting a gun to kill. But, I think if it meant living in a free country as we do, or living in a Communist government, I have to say that I would be the first one to fight.” —Susan Powell, Miss America
What do you think about nuclear disarmament?
“I think it is something that is very relevant today. I do believe that nuclear war should not ever happen. Yet, I know that a lot of children are growing up with the fear that it might happen and I never experienced that as a child, never even thought about nuclear war. I think that’s a threat we shouldn’t have to think about and I hope that something will be done about it.” —Vanessa Williams, Miss America
What do you feel about American foreign policy in South America?
“My feelings have changed every now and then because I have been so tied to South America. I love its people. Every country is so different and we can’t lump all of South America into one big package. Each country is unique, individual. We have to consider them as such. When it comes to an overall foreign policy, I would like to see support politically and economically to help with their infrastructure. They need that kind of help to get that cycle going, get the educational and economic level up. But when it comes to our military, I would prefer to see us OUT of those countries.” — Sharlene Wells, Miss America
