TLC Takes the Title with Pageant Series "King of the Crown"
Go Inside the World of Pageants in
New Series
Los Angeles, CA – TLC announced plans to premiere new pageant series KING OF THE CROWN, taking viewers
behind the glam, beyond the hair spray and into the unseen world of pageants. The show revolves around veteran pageant expert Cy Frakes, who has been coaching
aspiring beauty queens for over 20 years. Twelve episodes have been ordered and will premiere on TLC.
The world of pageants is estimated to be over a billion dollar a year business and continues to be of intrigue to many
Americans. TLC goes inside the world of competitive beauty pageants with Cy’s pageant training business, Gowns and Crowns, as his team helps clients perfect
everything from their walk, to their talk, to their hair, down to the dress. The premiere episode features the now infamous Caitlin Upton, the former Miss Teen
USA South Carolina who could not give a coherent answer during the question portion of the competition. She became a YouTube sensation, generating over 35
million views. In the premiere, Cy takes on the challenge of preparing the most parodied teen queen for a comeback to the pageant stage. He wants to not only
redeem Caitlin’s image, but also prove his business can deliver pageant-perfect women.
The team behind Gowns and Crowns, South Carolina’s premiere pageant coaching business, is made of more then just owner Cy. Behind
the sequins and the smiles are: Amanda Helen Pennekamp, a pageant competitor who helps train the aspiring title holders to perfect everything from their walk to
their self confidence; Kyle Taylor works as the booking agent scheduling appointments and wants to follow in Cy’s footsteps; Shane Mason is the interview
coach and part time referee amongst the staff.
“KING OF THE CROWN brings all the fun and excitement
of the pageant world with a lot of southern charm,” says TLC SVP Production and Development, Nancy Daniels. “Cy is a great personality who is not only
entertaining, but a real expert in his field. The series has the perfect balance of high stakes and heart. It also further builds out our pageant
programming.”
“The series definitely captures the essence of who I am and what I do,” says Frakes. “KING OF THE CROWN has a lot of humor but also
shows that we deal with broken heels, broken nails and, of course, broken hearts. We prepare girls beyond a superficial level; we prepare them to over
come any challenge in life.”
The series is produced for TLC by FiveFive Productions and Discovery Studios. Executive Producers are Amber Mazzola and Rachel Tung.

Teachers Laud the America's Junior Miss Program
I am writing regarding a scholarship program that I direct for high school girls in the
Greater Baltimore area. I hope you can recommend our program to your students...
- Scholarships are available to young women residing in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Harford County,
and Cecil County.
- Participants must be current juniors (class of 2011) with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5.
- We award cash scholarships (to be used for studies at any college/university) as well as in-kind
scholarships (tuition scholarships to colleges and universities across the country). ALL participants (so long as they maintain a 3.5 GPA) will receive
an invitation to attend Troy University (Troy, Alabama) on a FULL scholarship. Participants with a GPA of 3.75 or above are eligible for full
room and board as well!
I would like to emphasize that our program is a non-profit organization, and there is no cost to participants. Also (as I often have to clarify this) - we are NOT a pageant (much less a beauty pageant) and there is no "beauty" or "swimsuit"
component. The America's Junior Miss Program has been providing scholarship opportunities to outstanding, college-bound high school girls for over 50 years,
and encouraging personal development in all young people. Our winners make presentations at schools and community centers throughout the region, becoming
role models for many, and also growing as public speakers and making valuable contacts.
If you know a young woman who excels academically, is a positive role model for other young people, and has a strong performing talent -
please encourage her to look into our program. Details are available on our website, I am also happy to send you more information by mail (e.g. a

New York, NY – July 23, 2009 – Paula M. Shugart,
President of the Miss Universe Organization, announced today that superstar artists Flo Rida, Heidi Montag, David Guetta and Kelly Rowland will perform at
the 2009 Miss Universe Pageant. Billy Bush, co-anchor of “Access Hollywood” and
Claudia Jordan of “Celebrity Apprentice” and “Deal or No Deal,” will host the
competition live from Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas on August 23rd at 9 PM
ET on NBC and Telemundo.
International superstar Flo Rida will perform his
hugely successful hit, “Right Round” and “Jump” as part of a two song medley
during the Swimsuit Competition of the telecast. The rapper burst onto the scene
in 2008 with his blockbuster debut album, “Mail on Sunday.” Flo Rida’s single
“Right Round,” from his new album “R.O.O.T.S.,” became the fastest
million-selling digital song ever, reaching platinum status in just two weeks.
Included in the show will also be a performance
by reality star Heidi Montag featuring her single “Turn Ya Head.” The song comes
from Montag’s debut album, “Unleashed,” which was released in July. Along with
her music career, Montag is a cast member on the hit MTV show “The Hills.”
David Guetta and Kelly Rowland will set the tone
for the Evening Gown portion of the pageant. The popular duo will combine their
talents as they perform their hit single, “When Love Takes Over.” Guetta, a
world-renowned French DJ and producer, will release his fourth studio album in
August, “One Love,” with Rowland, an accomplished R & B solo artist and former
member of the band Destiny’s Child, providing the vocals for its lead single.
“When Love Takes Over” is already number one on the UK Singles Chart and is
quickly climbing in the US, having already been downloaded over 120,000 times on
iTunes.
Venezuelan native Dayana Mendoza, Miss Universe
2008, will crown her successor at the conclusion of the 2009 Miss Universe
telecast. During her reign, she has traveled the globe as an advocate for
HIV/AIDS education, research and legislation. The newly crowned Miss Universe
will go on to do the same.
Each contestant from more than 80 countries
around the world will be judged in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and
interview as they vie for the coveted title of Miss Universe 2009. In recent
years, the pageant has been viewed before an estimated worldwide viewing
audience of approximately 1 billion viewers.

New International Pageant Seeks Bahamian Representative
Nassau, The Bahamas… By the end of May, one lucky young woman will make
history as the first ever Miss Bahamas Global and head off to represent
the country at an international pageant. The new scholarship and talent
focused pageant aims to give ladies between ages 17 and 26 a platform to
not only display physical beauty but also showcase ways in on which they
can be positive role models, leaders and ambassadors for a worthy cause.
According to pageant director Desiree Tynes-Moss, a priority for the
contestants of the pageant was to make sure it would be fairly judged
and not compromise the faith of potential queens.
“As a former model and pageant contest, I’ve seen various sides of the
industry and I want to sensitize the public of the positive aspects of
pageantry,” said Mrs. Tynes-Moss. “As the mother of a young daughter, I
consider each of the contestants my own and would not want them in a
position where they would not feel comfortable. Overall, I think this
pageant will be successful when we have a caliber of ladies who will
represent not only the country but represent what today’s young women
should aspire to be like. Right now, we have a few girls who found out
about our pageant but we are still accepting more contestants especially
those from the Family Islands or those who may be living away and be
back home in time for the event.”
Mrs. Tynes-Moss added that the Miss Global Bahamas Organization’s aim is
to empower young ladies through pageantry by providing real
opportunities for them to excel through exposure, through a structured
dynamics, and enriching personal enhancement pageantry program. She
noted that while there is a scholarship and cash prize among other
goodies for the overall winner, self-appreciation is more important.
“We seek to instill self confidence, good moral values, and national
pride emphasis on personal character and leaderships, thus preparing
young ladies today for the road ahead tomorrow,” said Mrs. Tynes-Moss.
“Like we say in our motto, we seek empowerment through pageantry,
creating opportunities and changing lives. For one young woman, when she
wins this crown she will not be just another beauty queen but a living
part of history.”

Featuring Keynote Speaker, Miss World, 1998: Linor Abargil |
The Cleveland Rape Crisis Center (CRCC)
is pleased to have Miss World 1998, Linor Abargil, as the keynote
speaker for the 35th Anniversary Luncheon. CRCC continues to be the only
local agency specifically focused on reducing the incidences of sexual
violence. Last year alone, staff and volunteers reached more than 14,000
residents of our community including:
• 815 people received individual and group therapy
• 9,000 individuals participated in prevention education programming
• 3,000 calls were answered on our 24-hour hotline
• 111 rape survivors were provided advocacy and support at the hospital
• 251 victims had assistance navigating the legal system
• 1,000 police officers, mental health and health care service providers
received CRCC training about sexual violence.
At the age of 18 Linor Abargil was crowned Miss Israel. In March of
1998, she was sent to
represent her country in the Miss World Competition. Six weeks before
the contest, while she
was modeling in Italy, Linor was violently raped by an Israeli travel
agent. Days after
recovering, the world watched her cry onstage in the Seychelles Islands
when she was crowned
Miss World.
Linor is now enrolled in law school in Israel and intends to use her law
degree to represent
women who are victims of sexual violence. She is also embarking upon a
documentary project
(The Linor Documentary Project) on the subject of rape, in which she
will tell her own story and
reach out to other survivors of sexual assault around the world. Please
join us to Shatter the
Silence about Sexual Violence and help CRCC celebrate 35 years of
Strength. Compassion.
Hope. We look forward to seeing you on September 9, 2009!

Mary Maldonado, Miss
Beach Cities Galaxy, will compete for the title of Miss CA Galaxy
Nineteen-year-old Mary Maldonado,
Miss Beach Cities Galaxy, will compete in San Diego, CA for the
title of Miss CA Galaxy, August 25th-26th. Mary is a transfer
student, who will be transferring to CSULB, majoring in elementary
education. Mary plans on being a Kindergarten teacher.
Miss Maldonado is excited for the opportunity to compete in the
Galaxy system, especially in the great
state of California and hopefully have the chance to represent
California at the Miss Galaxy pageant, which
is held in July 2008, in Orlando, Fl. Should Mary be honored with
this title, she will travel throughout CA, promoting the pageant and
her platform, the LIVE Campaign, Advance Directive Awareness.
She at the young age of 18 had to decide to take her mother Marie
(her only living parent) off of life
support, after a fall in her home left her with internal bleeding
and swelling of the brain, which later caused brain loss. If her Mom
would have had an Advance Directive, or any written document, this
would have taken some of the pain away.
Mary, will promote the Galaxy pageant to every girl she meets, even
if they think that pageants aren't for
them! "You never know you don't like like something, unless you
try!", is what she has told friends and
family, regarding her involvement in pageants. Miss Maldonado, will
assist in making the Galaxy pageant a
huge success, by speaking with young women throughout California.
