1991 Miss America Pageant - Marjorie Vincent Miss Illinois wins

Marjorie Vincent, Miss Illinois, won the 1991 Miss America Pageant held in September 1990 in Atlantic City. Popular talk show hosts Regis Philbin and Kathie Lee Gifford are hired as the new as co-hosts of the Miss America Pageant, making Gifford the first woman to serve as a full-fledged co-host of the competition.

A third-year law student at Duke University School of Law, she is also an award-winning classical pianist who easily wins the preliminary talent competition playing Chopin's "Fantasie Impromptu Op. 66".

The platform she has chosen to address if selected the winner is Domestic Violence. Rumors have it that Miss Illinois has also nailed the private interviews with judges earlier in the week, where her background as a law student would have served her well.

As the outgoing Miss America 1990, Debbye Turner, crowns Miss Illinois as her successor, pageant history is made when the two African-American women become back-to-back Miss Americas. She is the fourth black woman to win the crown.

The achievement is made all the more interesting by the fact that the reigning Miss USA 1990, Carole Gist, Miss USA 1990 is also African-American.

Vincent is the daughter of Haiti parents who immigrated to the Chicago area in the 1960s where she was born, making her the first Haitian-American Miss America.
