Axum won the coveted preliminary swimsuit competition wearing a white one-piece swimsuit.
In the talent competition, she performed a semi-classical/popular vocal of "Quando Me'n Vo" and "I Love Paris". Although she did not win the preliminary talent competition, her adorable comical vocal routine - complete with Parisian sunglasses and an unruly fox stole which she whirls across the stage - was extremely popular with the audience and helped her quickly become a stand-out for the crown. In a sad historical coincidence, on November 22, 1963, Axum was making an appearance at a conference in Dallas, Texas when she learned that President John F. Kennedy had been assassinated... only miles away.
At the conclusion of her reign, Axum returned to crown her successor, Vonda Kay Van Dyke, Miss Arizona, as Miss America 1965.
Donna, who holds a master's degree and is a Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Arkansas, is a noted speaker and TV spokesperson.
The mother of a son and daughter, she is married to Bryan Whitworth, a petroleum executive.
