1962 Miss America Pageant - Maria Beale Fletcher Miss North Carolina wins
Maria Beale Fletcher, Miss North Carolina, won the 1962 Miss America Pageant in September 1961 in Atlantic City. She was crowned by her predecessor, Nancy Fleming Miss America 1961, of Michigan.
Miss America 1962 Maria Fletcher, Miss North Carolina, was a Radio City Rockette when she won the national title.
A long-legged Radio City Music Hall Rockette, Maria danced her way to the crown, performing a "pantomime tap dance". With those legs, she (naturally) won the swimsuit competition.
After a successful reign, she return to crown her successor, Jacquelyn Mayer, Miss America 1963, Miss Ohio.
A popular titleholder, Maria has been active supporting the program for many years.
She used her scholarship to attend Vanderbilt where she later graduated. Fletcher then married and reared two children.
Today, Maria enjoys being a writer and performer, and is committed to animal rights and the environment.
