Fleming was the last high school student to win the crown. She was a popular contestant who won both the preliminary swimsuit competition and talent competition, where she demonstrated her sewing creations (cape, overdress, apron, etc.) that could be mixed and matched to allow a girl to wear one dress for multiple activities throughout a busy day.

In the  swimsuit competition, she was a swimsuit winner, wearing a stunning in a white one-piece swimsuit with a modesty panel.

"It (being Miss America) gave me a real strong feeling that I could handle pretty much anything," she says of her year.

She returned to crown her successor, Maria Beale Fletcher, Miss North Carolina, as Miss America 1962.

She entered college shortly after her reign, but found it challenging to enter her freshman year of college while being the newly-retired Miss America. After throwing herself into earning her degree, Nancy went on to earn her college degree and became a successful television personality, hosting "A Whole New You", "A.M. San Francisco", "Heartbeat of the City", and "Sewing Today".

She married television host Jim Lange and has has two children from a previous marriage.
