1927 Miss America Pageant - Lois Delander wins
Lois Eleanor Delander, Miss Illinois, won the 1927 Miss America pageant.
Lois Delander Miss America 1927, Miss Illinois, was the last winner crowned before the pageant was discontinued until 1933.
Delander was 5'4 1/2 " tall, with light brown hair, blue eyes and "fair" complexion.
When a reporter noted that the beauty queen "handles household weapons like they are familiar objects," her mother admitted that Lois "is a great help around the house," that her crown hasn't kept her from "gathering around the gas stove occasionally."
Born on Valentine's Day in 1911, she died in 1985.
In 1928, after a number of scandals marred the Miss America pageant's public image and public support eroded, the bathing beauty contest was discontinued.
A year later, the stock market crashed, plunging the United States into the Great Depression.
