Eighteen-year-old Ruth Malcomson, Miss America 1924, represented Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the fourth Miss America beauty contest in Atlantic City. Mary Katherine Campbell, Miss America 1923, competed for the crown again, but finished as 1st runner-up. Fay Lanphier, Miss Santa Cruz (California), would go on to be named Miss America 1925.

Ruth Malcomson Miss America 1924, Miss Philadelphia, was discovered by a photographer.
Despite her having competed several times in the bathing revue, she wasn't always enthralled with her experience as a contestant. In a February 14, 1925 issue of Collier's magazine, she stated, "From what I have seen of of beauty shows and beauty contests, there is a fascinating glamour about them, but it is that of Fairyland with an artificial foundation."***

At the conclusion of her reign, she returned to Atlantic City to crown her successor, Fay Lanphier, Miss America 1925, Miss California.

However, later in life, she was less critical, even appearing with the newly-crowned Miss America Laurel Lea Schaefer, and fellow former Miss America 1954 Evelyn Ay, on the David Frost Show in September 1971.

After her reign, Ruth modeled for professional photographer, H. Armstrong Roberts.* She reportedly met her husband, Major Carl Schaubell, after he "drove a polo ball out of bounds and it landed in her lap."** Schaubell was "a key aide to General Eisenhower in World War II and then vice president of administration at Widener University."**

Malcomson died in 1988 after a long battle with cancer.

Her niece, Lorna Malcomson Ringler, competed as Miss Pennsylvania 1956, and her grand-niece, Jodi Graham, was Miss Delaware 1981.
