1923 Miss America Pageant - Miss Ohio, Mary Katherine Campbell, wins
Mary Katherine Campbell, Miss America 1922, also won the 1923 pageant, making her the only woman to win the title twice.
The 1923 Miss America pageant was won by the reigning Miss America 1922, Mary Katherine Campbell (the girl with the "figure"), of Columbus, Ohio. She competed for a second time for the Miss America 1923 title and emerged victorious -- making her the only contestant ever to win the Miss America title twice.
Campbell entered the pageant again in 1924 and nearly captured the title a third time, finishing as first runner-up to Miss America 1924, Ruth Malcomson, Miss Philadelphia.
Her high school boyfriend submitted her photo to the pageant's local newspaper mail-in contest while she was a student at East High School in Columbus. She won that event, launching her road to the soon-to-be-famed beauty title.*
At the conclusion of her reign, she returned to Atlantic City in 1924, where she narrowly lost to her successor, Ruth Malcomson Miss America 1924.
After her double reign, Campbell retired from her appearances as a "bathing beauty", attended Ohio State University and Ohio Wesleyan University, where she studied art. She later married Frederick Townley, a DuPont executive.
Mary Katherine died in 1990.
