The outgoing Miss Universe 2009, Stefania Fernandez, crowned her successor at the conclusion of the two-hour primetime telecast before an estimated worldwide viewing audience of approximately one billion viewers.
The pageant which was aired on NBC and Telemundo, was televised live from Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Throughout the two-hour event, the 83 contestants from around the world competed in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and personality interview during live on-stage questions.
During the swimsuit competition, Navarrete wore a purple sequin-trimmed bikini and radiated personality and relaxed confidence, sashaying down the catwalk seductively and even giggling as she smiled at judges.

During the important on-stage questions, which were asked by the panel of judges, Evan Lysacek, the Olympic gold-medalist skater, asked Jimena Navarrete, then Miss Mexico, what her views were on children using the Internet without supervision. Navarrete replied, "I believe that Internet is an indispensable, necessary tool for the present time, but we must be sure to teach them the values that we learned as a family."
Her competition, Miss Philippines Venus Raj, who was considered to have an excellent chance of winning, was presumed to have lost her chance with her weak answer to judge William Baldwin's question about what life mistake she would go back and change. "In my twenty-two years of existence," Raj replied, "I can say that I haven't had a major, major problem because I am very confident with my family and the love that they are giving to me so thank you so much that I am here. Thank you so much."
