Nicole Johnson, Miss Virginia, was crowned Miss America 1999. She was crowned by outgoing Miss America 1998, Kate Shindle, of Illinois.
As a diabetic who wears an insulin pump, Johnson was the first Miss America to have a long-term physical condition. She had initially been advised that competing in pageants could be detrimental to her health, but she decided to push by the limiting opinions of others and continued to pursue the Miss Virginia title. The rest is history.
At the conclusion of her year, she crowned her successor, Miss America 2000, Heather French, Miss Kentucky. Nicole went on to earn her doctorate in public administration and is a highly-regarded advocate for those with diabetes.
