Heather Whitestone, Miss Alabama, wins the 1995 Miss America Pageant. A hugely popular winner, she is the first physically handicapped woman ever to be named Miss America. Profoundly deaf, she is the first physically handicapped woman to win the title.
Profoundly hearing-impaired, Heather Whitestone dances away with the coveted Miss America title, after dancing a ballet en pointe to music she could not hear (Via Delarosa) and chatting with host Regis Philbin on live national television by lip-reading his questions. Talk about composure under pressure!
In the evening gown competition, she wears an elegant Grecian-style white gown with her hair worn softly upswept. She was a standout in the swimsuit competition, where she wore a one-piece white swimsuit.
In one of the most endearing moments in pageant history, as a the profoundly-deaf woman steps to center stage to be crowned Miss America 1995.
A beloved Miss America winner and inspiration to millions of Americans of Americans, Heather promotes her platform, S.T.A.R.S. (“Success Through Action and Realization of your dreams) throughout her reign.
Whitestone also becomes the first Miss America ever interviewed on a Barbara Walters’ television special.
At the conclusion of her reign, she crowned her successor, Miss America 1996, Shawntel Smith, Miss Oklahoma.
In 2002, her hearing is largely restored by cochlear implant surgery.
