Debbye Lynn Turner, Miss Missouri, was named Miss America 1990 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. She was crowned by her predecessor, Miss America 1989, Gretchen Carlson, of Minnesota.
Debbye Turner won the swimsuit competition wearing a bright yellow “supersuit” swimsuit. She performed a marimba solo of “Flight of the Bumble Bee”, “Czardas” and “Can Can” during the talent competition.
At the conclusion of her reign, Debbye crowned her successor, Miss America 1991, Marjorie Vincent, of Illinois. This was the second time in Miss America history that black women won back-to-back Miss America titles (the first being Vanessa Williams and Suzette Charles in 1984).
Debbye went on to complete her doctorate degree in Veterinary Medicine and to become a vet and television personality.
