Gretchen Carlson was Miss America 1989, after competing as Miss Minnesota. The former high school valedictorian and honors student at Stanford University won the talent competition after performing a superb classical violin solo while wearing lovely velvet talent costuming.
She was crowned by outgoing Miss America 1988, Kaye Lani Rae Rafko, of Michigan.
At the conclusion of her year, Gretchen crowned her successor, Miss America 1990, Debbye Turner, Miss Missouri.
She achieved fame as a television news personality, noted for co-hosting “Fox & Friends”. She later sued Roger Ailes, head of the Fox TV network for harassment and reportedly settled for $20 million. Shortly thereafter, she wrote the book, “Be Fierce,” to address the nationwide problem of harassment in the workplace.
In 2018, she was appointed as chairperson of the Board of Director of the Miss America Organization, the first woman in the pageant’s history to hold that position.
