Miss America 1980 was Cheryl Prewitt, Miss Mississippi. She was crowned by outgoing Miss America 1979, Kylene Barker, of Virginia.
A born-again Christian, Cheryl made headlines for sharing how God had healed her crushed leg during two miraculous moments. She had been gravely injured in a car accident, with her leg crushed and extensive stitches required to her face. After attended a healing ministry event by an evangelist, as she was prayed for, and in a miraculous healing, the injured leg grew to the same length as the healthy leg.
Years after that healing, she would win the swimsuit competition at the national pageant. She performed “Don’t Cry Out Loud” in a combination vocal/piano performance in the talent competition. During the evening gown competition, she wore a gorgeous white chiffon gown with a blue and purple floral print and rhinestone straps across one shoulder.
After her reign, she crowned her successor, Susan Powell, Miss America 1981, Miss Oklahoma.
Today, she and her husband and family formed Salem Family Ministries and now speak in churches and events across the nation.
