Kylene Barker, Miss Virginia, was named Miss America 1979 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. A student from Roanoke, Virginia, her goal is to open a fashion boutique one day on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach. She was crowned by outgoing Miss America 1978 Susan Perkins, of Ohio.
Kylene wore a white lace fitted gown with rhinestone straps in the evening gown competition. In the talent competition, she performed a gymnastics exhibit to “Feeling So Good” and “The Theme from Rocky”. In the swimsuit competition, she wore a vivid yellow one-piece swimsuit.
After her reign, Kylene crowned her successor, Miss America 1980, Cheryl Prewitt, Miss Mississippi. She opened a boutique, D. Kylene, on Worth Avenue with the money she earned as Miss America.
