Miss America 1975: Shirley Cothran, Miss Texas
1st runner-up: Lucianne Buchanan, Miss California
2nd runner-up: Jean Ahern, Miss Illinois
3rd runner-up: Darlene Compton, Miss Kentucky
4th runner-up: Libby Lovejoy, Miss Lousiana
Miss Texas, Shirley Cothran, was chosen as Miss America 1975 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Cothran held a master’s degree in Education.
In the swimsuit competition, she wore a pink one-piece swimsuit and for the talent competition, she played “Swingin’ Shepherd Blues” and “Bumble Boogie” on the flute in the talent competition. In the evening gown competition, she wore an elegant white chiffon gown with billowing sheet gathered sleeved and a crystal embroidered bodice.
She was crowned by outgoing Miss America 1974, Rebecca King, of Colorado.
At the conclusion of her reign, she crowned her successor, Miss New York, Tawny Elaine Godin, a student at Syracuse University.
Shirley went on to earn a doctorate degree in Education and is a highly respected former Miss America who resides in Denton, Texas.
