Rebecca King, Miss Colorado, was crowned Miss America 1974. That year’s competition was picketed by a women’s liberation movement protesters outside on the Atlantic City Boardwalk.
She performed a vocal rendition of “If I Ruled the World” in the talent competition and wore a light yellow one-piece swimsuit in the swimsuit competition. In the evening gown competition, she wore a white satin gown with a lace bodice and spaghetti straps.
King made headlines when she became the first Miss America to admit that she entered the pageant to win scholarship money to attend law school. She was crowned by outgoing Miss America 1973, Terry Meeuwsen, of Wisconsin.
At the conclusion of her reign, she crowned her successor, Miss America 1975, Shirley Cothran, Miss Texas. King attended law school, passed the bar, and is a successful attorney in Denver.
