Phylls George, Miss Texas, was named Miss America 1971 in Atlantic City.
She was crowned by outgoing Miss America 1970 Pamela Eldred of Michigan. Moments after being crowned, her specially-manufacturer golden crown toppled off her head, splattering rhinestones along the runway. She picked up the crown and carried it for her victory walk.
Phyllis performed “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head” on the piano during the talent competition and won the swimsuit competition wearing a right yellow lace swimsuit. After being crowned, she attended her first winner’s press conference with her pet crab “Herman” with her.
After her reign, Phyllis returned to Atlantic City to crown her successor, Laurel Schaefer, Miss America 1972.
