Debra Dene Barnes, Miss Kansas, was crowned Miss America 1968 by the outgoing Miss America, Jane Jayroe of Oklahoma.
A Piano Pedagogy major, she played four versions of “Born Free” on the piano during the talent competition. In the evening gown competition, she wore a stunning strapless aqua blue chiffon gown with her hair upswept in an elegant style.
She won the swimsuit competition earlier in the week.
At the end of her reign, she crowned her successor, Judith Ford, Miss America 1969, during a pageant marred by protests from women’s liberation movement protesters.
