Donna Axum, Miss Arkansas, won the 1964 Miss America Pageant in September 1963 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where she was crowned by Jacquelyn Mayer, Miss America 1963 of Ohio.
Axum won the coveted preliminary swimsuit competition wearing a white one-piece swimsuit. In the talent competition, she performed a combination classical/popular vocal rendition of “Quando m’en vo” from “Musetta’s Waltz” and “I Love Paris.”
At the conclusion of her reign, Axum returned to crown her successor, Vonda Kay Van Dyke, Miss America 1965, Miss Arizona.
Donna, who holds a master’s degree and is a Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Arkansas, is a noted speaker and TV spokesperson. She was also the first former Miss America to serve on the Miss America Pageant Board of Directors.
