Jacquelyn Mayer, Miss Ohio, was crowned Miss America 1963 in September 1962 in Atlantic City by outgoing titleholder Maria Fletcher, Miss America 1962. Although she did not win either the preliminary swimsuit or talent competitions, she was an extremely poised contestant who stood out among the contestants for her effortless grace. In the talent competition, she performed a Broadway vignette singing “Wishing Upon a Star.”
At the conclusion of her year, she returned to crown her successor Donna Axum, Miss America 1964, Miss Arkansas.
At age twenty-eight, Jacquelyn experienced a massive stroke that left her partially paralyzed and unable to speak.
With amazing courage and the help of her husband and small children, she battled her way to health, eventually becoming a spokesperson for the Stroke Association which awarded her its Hope and Courage Award.
