Mary Ann Mobley, Miss America 1959, of Mississippi, was crowned in September 1958 by her predecessor Marilyn Van Derbur, Miss America 1958, of Colorado. Miss America 1959 Mary Ann Mobley, the first of two Miss Mississippi’s to win the crown.
At the conclusion of her reign, she crowned her fellow Miss Mississippi and sorority sister, Lynda Lee Mead as Miss America 1960.
Mobley became a successful actress who starred in a number of movies and appeared in the hit TV series Different Strokes and Falcon Crest.
She married actor Gary Collins with whom she has one daughter Clancy. She and Collins eventually became co-hosts for the Miss America pageant, who became the Pageant’s emcee. Diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, Mobley has become an inspiring role model for others suffering from the disease.
