Bette Cooper, Miss Bertrand Island, New Jersey, was named Miss America 1937 after entering the local Miss Bertrand Island contest on a dare from friends. Bette Cooper, Miss Bertrand Island, was named Miss America 1937. Her predecessor was Miss America 1936, Rose Coyle.
In the talent competition, Cooper performed a vocal to “When the Poppies Bloom Again”. She wore a velvet sheath dress in the evening gown competition and wore her hair in the softly curles short style popular during the 1930s.
Uncomfortable with the Vaudville-style appearances she would have to make that year as the winner, she decided to simply leave. With her parents’ permission, she quietly slipped away with her handsome bachelor chaperone who hid her on his cabin cruiser off shore. Once she surfaced, the queen kept the title, but quietly returned home to resume her studies.
After graduating, Cooper married engineer William Moore, with whom she had two children, William and Cheryl.
